Rhonda and Michael Fredrickson met, built a house and got married all in a span of 14 months. And for some of that time, they weren’t even in the same city.

They met online in June 2020 and agreed to meet in Winnipeg, where Rhonda — then Rhonda Dagg — was living. Michael was in Winnipeg for work at the time.

“She knew I was from Calgary but met me for coffee anyway,” he says.

They were so smitten with each other that Rhonda ended the travelling back and forth by selling her house in Winnipeg. She arrived in Calgary for good in November, when construction on their first home together was well under way.

“We started the process before I moved. We would video chat and he would take me through show homes with his phone,” she says.

The plan they decided upon was the Berkley Corner, a two-storey front-garage home by Mattamy Homes in The Enclave, a unique phase of its Carrington community in northwest Calgary.

The Fredrickson’s Georgian Colonial-style home has 1,920 square feet and boasts a large open-concept main floor just begging for a party to break out.

“We could have 30 people here on the main floor and still have room for more,” Michael says.

The home has three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a central bonus room upstairs.

While they chose their model and lot by video call, they selected their interiors in person at Mattamy’s design centre in Calgary. Picking out colours and cabinet styles helped further their relatively new relationship.

“We have similar tastes. It was pretty easy,” says Michael. “Rhonda should be designing show homes because she likes all the decorative things that finish off a home. She likes places for everything, like me. I don’t like clutter.”

“We worked well together. I didn’t have to pull any trump cards or anything,” she says with a smile.

They took possession of their home in June, giving them time to settle in before their Sept. 4 wedding in Calgary.

The main floor and kitchen are Michael’s favourite aspects of the home while Rhonda loves to relax on the front verandah. Both look forward to having family spend time with them.

“I have three kids and Rhonda has family. We can house a lot of people here, which is important,” Michael says.

Carrington is north of Stoney Trail with easy access to the airport for Michael, who travels frequently for business and for Rhonda, who has career ties to Winnipeg.

The Enclave, which is Phase 5 of Carrington, was launched in 2019 and is now 84 per cent sold. Prices start in the low $500,000s with five models to choose from, excluding the Berkley Corner which is sold out.

The Enclave is nestled by an environmental reserve with quick access to the 138-km Rotary/Mattamy Greenway that circles the city. Sales consultant Jozee Dore says the exclusive nature of the location and the unique architecture, with brick accents and decorative entrances, have attracted most buyers.

“The elevations are unique to Carrington and also to Calgary. We see people coming from Eastern Canada who wonder why there aren’t more of these types of brick homes, so they definitely stand out,” she says.

With just five lots remaining, Dore says buyers who want larger lots can look to Phase 6 of Carrington, where lots are as wide as 44 feet.

She says work will begin soon on the 90,000 square-foot commercial site in Carrington with a confirmed No Frills location. It’s expected to be completed November 2022.

Michael says that his corner of the northwest is so well served by stores and services that any more will just be a bonus.

“Carrington is close to Country Hills, Evanston and Cross Iron Mills. Anything we need is within a 10-minute drive. And when they finish the 14th Street overpass at Stoney Trail, that will be even better.”
